Hey Everyone! I have something really cool to share with you guys today! This past weekend I had the great fortune to go see an amazing art installation by the artist Kara Walker in the old Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The main attraction is a huge sculpture of a Sphinx with the head of a stereotypical African American maid, which, believe it or not, is partially made of sugar. Check out the photo below: That's me down in the bottom of the picture, waving. Can you believe how big that thing is? Plus the whole building smelled like sugar, it was a delicious experience! But it wasn't just cool to look at and lovely to smell, through this sugar lady and the other sculptures in the installation the artist Kara Walker also makes statements about race, class and gender. If you're interested in reading more about that I'd like to point you to the website (http://creativetime.org/projects/karawalker/), because they're able to examine these issues better than I can explain it! And if you're interested in reading more about Kara Walker definitely check out her page on the Artsy website (https://www.artsy.net/artist/kara-walker), they have tons of information about her! For all of you in the New York area I definitely recommend you check it out for yourself. As cool as it looks in the photo, it's a million times more awesome in person! I just hope Sugar Lady hasn't melted, it's pretty hot in NYC! Oh yeah, and one more thing - in case you were wondering, the Sugar Lady has a pretty impressive butt as well, here it is: I hope I haven't offended anyone with this photo on the blog. If I have I'll just say this: it's just a butt people, we all have one, get over it - hahahaha! Have a great week!

Hey Everyone! Today is my favorite day of the year - it's my birthday! It's a beautiful day here in NYC and I couldn't have had a better day. I met some friends in Central Park and we had a picnic, I walked around and did a little bit of shopping, (nothing wrong with treating yourself on your birthday!) and I'm going to go salsa dancing later tonight. Did you know that I love to salsa dance? Because I do! This mule can tear it up on the dance floor - hahaha! So everyone knows that one of the best things about birthdays are birthday presents and in case anyone out there wanted to get me something here are a few ideas: Well, in case you couldn't guess, this list is kind of a joke. I say "kind of" because I certainly wouldn't return any of these things if someone happened to give them to me! But in all seriousness, I am one content little Mule. I have wonderful friends and family and a full, exciting life. Who could ask for more? Have a great Wednesday everyone & I'll catch up with you soon!
Hi Everyone! So sorry I've been off the grid these past couple of weeks. Did ya miss me? I was actually involved in a very special event and I promise I'll tell you all about it and post some pics soon. But for now I wanna talk about a lady who I love a lot: Wendy Williams!! Are there any Wendy fans out there? I hope so! Wendy Williams is fabulous and her talk show is my fav. I'm a sucker for celebrity gossip and that's her specialty. The Wendy Williams show tapes here in New York, and last week I got to go to the taping! I was so excited I could barely stand it. And I made it on tv too, here's a screen grab from the show: Loyal blog readers will probably recognize my outfit. It was from my Summer Fashion Roundup. Anyone who watches the Wendy Williams show knows that the audience is always dressed to the nines, and I thought my floral dress from that photo shoot would be just the thing. I had such a good time, Wendy did not disappoint, she was fab as ever! But actually, it was not the first time I have been in Wendy Williams' presence. I actually met her years ago in LA. I think her talk show had just started airing. I loved her from the beginning so when I saw her on the street I just had to say hello. She was so cool and even posed for a photo with me, check it out: Don't we look great together? Actually, this gives me an idea: Wendy had Miss Piggy as a guest on the show once, how about Apples The Mule? Have a great week everyone!
Hi Everyone! Do you love fashion? Do you love summer? Then this post is for you! I was recently contacted by Buzz Magazine to take part in a photo shoot of fun, fabulous summer looks. Usually when I do photo shoots a stylist picks out the clothes and accessories but this time it was all me. Check out the slideshow below to see my take on summer fashion: So here's a little rundown of the summer trends we explored in this shoot: 1. Color! This purple dress is fabulous, isn't it? I love pairing a brightly colored dress with quirky accessories. Don't be afraid to mix and match, just have fun with it! 2. But on the flip side of that, all white is always a good choice and looks great against a summer tan! Pair with silver or gold jewelry for a Grecian-inspired look that's totally modern. 3. There is nothing that says "summer" better than a sundress in a flirty pattern. Enough said. 4. Stripes! Stripes are great all year round, but I especially love stripes in the summer. Stripes are essential for a nautical-inspired look, which always looks fresh and put-together and summery. 5. Tropical-inspired prints. Once it gets hot out I wanna go on vacation to a tropical island, but if I can't make that happen it helps a little to dress like I'm there! I like to go bold with the accessories here too, strong tropical prints lend themselves to unique jewelry. 6. Hippie-chick clothes are so comfy in the summer, I find myself reaching for them all the time! The loose, gauzy fabrics keep you cool when the temperature is hot and at the end of the day, being comfortable is the most important thing! Well, that's my Summer Fashion Roundup. What's your favorite summer trend? I'd love to hear from you! Have a fabulous day everyone!
Hey Everyone, how's it going? It's been a few weeks since I've done a Throwback Thursday post, sorry about that! Today I have a cool photo to share though. Do you all know Maxwell The Pig? You probably do, even if you don't know his name. He's also known as The Geico Pig, and he has been starring in Geico's commercials for a while now. He is a good friend of mine and this photo is of the two of us at the famous restaurant and "celebrity hot spot" The Ivy a few years back: I took him to The Ivy to celebrate when he found out that he booked the Geico gig. Actually we were both up for that job, as were several other animal friends, believe it or not, but if the job wasn't meant to be for me I'm so glad it went to my good buddy Maxwell! He's so charming and funny and I think he does just a fantastic job! Check him out in action below and have a great weekend everyone! Hey Guys! I hope everyone had a nice long weekend. It was sunny and warm here in NYC yesterday, and for the first time after this long winter and cold spring I felt like summer just might be on its way. That made me happy because I am a summer-lovin' gal for sure! Here are a few of my favorite summer activities: Mmmmm, ice cream, I love eating ice cream! I don't know how to decide which one I want though, guess I'll have to eat them all! Amusement parks! I LOVE amusement parks, especially roller coasters. I've been on the Cyclone down in Coney Island about 87 times (roughly) and I can't wait to go again this summer! I don't recommend doing these first two summer activities in order though, you should probably wait until after the Cyclone to consume 6 ice cream cones. And speaking of consuming a lot of food, you should stay away from Coney Island on July 4th if you're squemish, that's the day they hold the hot dog eating contest. The guy that won last year ate 69 hot dogs in 10 minutes - gross! Camping! That's me on the left (duh!) poking my head out of the tent during a camping adventure last year. I may be a city girl now but I love getting out into nature and getting back in touch with my earthy side, which is what I was doing in the photo on the right. That's a pretty advanced yoga move I'm doing though, so don't try this at home kids! Fresh fruit salads and smoothies - I practically exist on these when the weather's hot and I don't feel like eating anything else. And nothing wrong with spiking your smoothie with a little rum or tequila at night, (or during the day - hahaha!) it's still got the nutrients from the fresh fruit and will help you get the party started! Outdoor movies! I love movies, I love the outdoors, combining the two is a no-brainer! My local outdoor movie location is in Brooklyn Bridge Park and of all the outdoor movies in the country I think we might have the most spectacular view, wouldn't you agree? And finally, my very favorite thing about summer is that you can go to the beach! I love the beach! All winter long I fantasize about burying myself in the sand, frolicking in the water, having Aziz Ansari rub suntan lotion all over my body........................................ Wait what? What happened? So sorry, I must have trailed of there for a minute. Anyway, to summarize - beach: good, Aziz Ansari: good, Aziz Ansari with me at the beach: Best Thing Ever! Happy beginning of summer everyone & I'll catch y'all later! Just one more photo, I couldn't mention "My Man" without showing a photo of him. There are still no photos of Aziz shirtless, unfortunately, but he's looking pretty summery here.
Hey Everyone! Oh boy, is today an exciting day, it's May 22nd! A lot of important things have happened throughout history on May 22nd. Here is a selection: 334 BC: The Macedonian army of Alexander the Great defeated Darius III of Persia in the Battle of the Granicus. The Battle of Granicus was the first of three major battles between Alexander and the Persian Empire, and among many other battles that this handsome badass fought. 1570: The first atlas was published by Abraham Ortelius in Antwerp, Belgium. It contained 70 maps and I still can't figure out how they made maps before google satellite existed! 1803: First public library in the United States opened in Salisbury, Connecticut. I hope whoever checked out that first book didn't lose it, can you imagine how much that fine would be? 1892: Dr. Washington Sheffield invented the toothpaste tube. I guess before that toothpaste came in jars? I'm glad Dr. Sheffield invented the tube, it'd be hard to squeeze a jar - hahaha! 1967: Mister Roger's Neighborhood debuted on television. What a wonderful day that was, I watched his show almost every day when I was a little kid and I wished so much that I could go visit his neighborhood! And finally, (and maybe most importantly - hahaha!) on May 22nd, 2013 a little mule named Apples sat down in front of her computer in Brooklyn, New York, and started a blog. That's right people, it's been a whole year since I started this blog - can you believe it? I want to thank everyone who has stopped by the blog to read my anecdotes and check out my photos and videos. I have loved doing this blog and I'm excited to keep on going with it. It's been a great year but it's only the beginning. Watch out world, Apples is coming!
Hey Everyone, Happy Monday! I hope you had a good weekend. Just a quick post today with my thoughts on whether or not you should care about the upcoming wedding of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, aka "Kimye." Enjoy and please feel free to tell me what you think, whether you agree with me or not, I'm always up for a good debate! Hey Everyone, happy hump day! How's your week going? Today I'm going to talk about twitter. Are you guys on twitter? I was initially not a fan, it seemed like just another unnecessary social media annoyance, but I have changed my tune over the past few months. I found some people, mostly professional comedians but some non-comedian people too who write really clever tweets and I realized that when done right twitter can be an art form. It's a lot harder than it seems to write something clever using only 140 characters, but I'm working at it and building my twitter followers steadily. Here are some examples of what I think are really funny tweets: So those are some tweets from the pros, now here are some of mine: So what do you think? Are my tweets good enough to be up there with the big boys and girls? I hope so! You can check out all my tweets at https://twitter.com/ApplesTheMule, and if you're on twitter definitely follow me and I'll follow you right back! Have a good rest of your Wednesday everyone!
Hey Everyone, hope you had a good week! Just a quick post today, check out my latest "Should You Care?" video. And -spoiler alert- you should definitely care about this one..... Have a wonderful weekend! |
