Hey Guys! Remember a couple of weeks ago I was complaining that most of what are considered to be the "great film monologues of all time" are performed by men? You can refresh your memory here if you don't remember: http://www.applesthemule.com/blog/you-cant-handle-the-truth Well today I have my interpretation of another of the greats, Marlon Brando's famous monologue from "On The Waterfront." If you're not familiar with this movie: a) I kinda wonder if you just emerged from a bio-dome and b) you should familiarize yourself with it immediately. "On the Waterfront" is one of the greatest movies of all time and features a sizzling performance from a young, hunky Marlon Brando. Mr. Brando and I studied the same acting technique called "The Method," so I may be a little biased but I think that when he's at his best there's almost nobody better. So of course it was a little intimidating performing this monologue, but I did the best I could and I hope I did it justice. Enjoy!

Hey Guys! How's it going? Guess what - I got some new headshots! For those of you not in the biz (show biz that is), headshots are just what they sound like, shots or pictures of your head. We use them to submit for acting jobs, and if you look like the right type then the casting directors call you in for an audition. Actors should update their headshots every couple of years and I must confess that I am long overdue for some new acting headshots. So last week I had a session with a photographer here in NYC, Allessandra Carullo, and I could not be more thrilled with the results! Check them out: The top one I'm going to use to submit for more comedic type roles and the bottom for more dramatic roles. We did the shoot in midtown Manhattan, in an industrial area near the West Side Highway. It can be a little distracting shooting outside because NYC doesn't pause just so you can do your photo shoot. People walk past the shoot (or sometimes through it!), cars honk and there's wind and dust blowing everywhere. But it's also really fun and I think you get a much more natural picture when you're a little distracted. Anyway, I think I have some fabulous new headshots and I can't wait to submit them for jobs. Fingers (or hooves) crossed that they'll help me book a ton of work! Have a great weekend everyone!
Hey Guys! We're right in the full swing of summer, and if you're in New York City like I am it means that it's the time when the city is more jam packed with tourists than even seems possible. To be honest, there really isn't any time in NYC that isn't a tourist season but the summer is definitely the worst. Oops, I mean the most crowded. Yes, we know we need tourists and NYC is an amazing city that everyone should come visit sometime in their life. But it takes a lot of patience to live here and try to go about your daily activities while fighting a crowd of slow, confused people. I was going to write out a list of tips for tourists but I actually came across this hilarious video and decided that the folks who made this video did a better job than I could. Take it away Johnny T! All credit to the people over at Glove and Boots for this video and for more from Johnny T and all of his friends check out http://www.gloveandboots.com/!
Hey Everyone! My throwback pic is a little different today. Longtime readers of the blog will remember that way back when I did a couple of "Where's Apples?" posts. I took a picture and photoshopped myself in it somewhere like those old "Where's Waldo?" books. I haven't done one of those posts in I don't know how long but I thought it'd be fun to "throw back" to the early days of the blog and do one now. Check it out, see if you can find me: Did you find me? I'll give you a hint - I'm lying down. This photo shows people camped out to watch the free outdoor movie at Brooklyn Bridge Park. It's something I have done for years, and one of my favorite things to do in the summer. It gets really crowded though, this photo must be pretty early on in the evening. So I should actually say that watching the movies is a terrible experience, don't bother coming - hahahaha! Just kidding, plenty of room for everyone. Have a great weekend everyone!
Hey Guys! How many of you out there have had weird, random jobs? I have certainly had my fair share. As a performer you don't always know where your next paycheck is going to come from, so when jobs come along you take them no matter how strange they are. Some of the weirder jobs I have had involve some sort of costume and handing out free samples or coupons. It's pretty common to see people doing this kind of work here in NYC, especially around the Times Square area. But even so it can be pretty embarrassing, depending on what kind of costume you're wearing. I have definitely worn some embarrassing ones and here's one example: Yep, I was a pickle and I was handing out coupons for some new kind of pickle that came out. Thrilling work, huh? What can I say - a mule's gotta do what a mule's gotta do. I definitely got my fair share of interesting comments from passers-by. I think my favorite was from a little kid who asked his mom: "Why is that hot dog green?" Kids are so funny, I was cracking up for hours! Happy Tuesday, catch y'all later!
I came across something interesting online yesterday. Somebody made a list of the the top fifty film monologues of all time. I'm a sucker for lists of things so I clicked on the link. I got to about number 15 when I started to notice something. All of the monologues in this list had been performed by male actors. The closest thing to a woman in the top 25 was Dustin Hoffman as Dorothy in "Tootsie," and in total only 3 women were represented in this list. Now I know that it was just a random list done by a random person (seen here if you want to see for yourself: http://www.film.com/movies/the-50-greatest-movie-monologues), but I found other similar lists on different websites and they were all male dominated. Maybe this is a symptom of female voices being under-represented in screenwriting and film making in general but it rankled me nonetheless! If you know anything about me then you know that when I get rankled I take matters into my own hooves, so I decided that I'm going to do a series of videos where I perform some of these men's monologues. I wanna show the world that females can be just as powerful and compelling and strong and dramatic as the men and there's no reason why these lists shouldn't be filled with monologues done by Meryl Streep and Katherine Hepburn and Vivien Leigh and Cate Blanchett and Ingrid Bergman and Elizabeth Taylor and Kate Winslet and a bunch of other ladies who I don't have room to mention. So here's the first in the series, my interpretation of Jack Nicholson's monologue from "A Few Good Men." Enjoy! Hey Everyone! Well, the World Cup is over now, how's everyone feeling? Are you a huge soccer fan and wish the tournament would go on forever or are you pretty much maxed out after a month of matches? Or did it come and go and you barely noticed? I definitely enjoyed watching the games and I explained why the World Cup is important in a previous post, seen here: http://www.applesthemule.com/blog/world-cup-should-you-care. But since scoring is so rare, soccer games can be a little tedious to watch sometimes and so I really liked when they would pan to the audience so we could see all the crazy get ups. And even though I felt terrible for Brazil when they lost their match to Germany it was pretty funny to see the horrified faces of the Brazillian fans wearing their "over the top" fan costumes. And I had a little spare time today so I went ahead and recreated my favorites. Here it is folks, Happy Monday!
Hey Guys, Happy Throwback Thursday! I can't remember the last time I shared a Throwback picture so I guess it's been too long. Sorry about that, but I've got a good one to make it up to you. It's the middle of summer now and I think I've mentioned before that I love the beach. But did I ever mention that I love surfing too? I'm no expert and I don't even own a board so I haven't been surfing in years, but check me out on a trip to Hawaii years back: I look pretty sharp, don't I? I feel like I have my "concentration" face on though, and I needed it because surfing is no joke. This was just a little itty bitty wave too, I don't know how those dudes ride the huge waves. I don't think I could do that, I stick to the ones 3 feet and under. I'm just a little mule after all - hahaha! But check out the video below if you wanna see the world record for biggest wave ridden ever at 100 feet. The guy who rode that wave is named Garrett McNamara and he's either one of the coolest or one of the craziest dudes around. Or both! Have a great weekend everyone! Hey Guys! Do you ever wish you could make a drastic yet temporary change to your look? That's how I've been feeling lately, like I wanna mix things up but without making permanent changes. Well what better way to do that than with a wig? I have a friend that owns a wig shop so I decided to go over and play dress up. Or rather wig up - hahahaha! I had so much fun trying on different wigs and my friend was kind enough to snap some photos. Each new wig made me feel like a brand new mule! The first is kind of a play on "The Rachel" hairdo, but with a modern spin: I felt super sassy with this wig, it's such a great look for the summer. The next look I called "The Oprah:" These are the same style of magnificent curls that Ms. Winfrey has been sporting the past couple of years. I always wanted curly hair and this wig was just fabulous. The next wig I tried was an adorable little brunette pixie wig: I love this look on Anne Hathaway or Jennifer Lawrence but I'm not sure if it's quite right for me. I think it kinda looks like I have a bad toupee on! But the next wig is on the other side of the spectrum, check it out: Look at those gorgeous honey blonde waves, isn't that wig spectacular? I felt like such a babe! I'm pretty sure I'd turn heads in this wig, anyone would. And finally, this last wig is straight out of one of the coolest movies ever: You got it - Uma Thurman in "Pulp Fiction." I think it's pretty cool, I felt kinda like a Russian spy too. So what do you think? Which wig looks best on me? I can't decide, I think it's between the dark curls and the long blonde waves. Maybe I'll just buy them all and I can be a new mule every day of the week! Well, that's all for now. Happy Tuesday everyone & catch ya later!
Hey All! First of all, Happy Fourth of July! It's rainy here in NYC so it's not feeling quite as festive as usual but I'm planning on going and watching some fireworks later on. I hope the weather is nicer in other parts of the country and everyone is enjoying their day off! Well, the World Cup has been going on for a few weeks now and I have definitely been watching and I know I'm not alone! The World Cup is the most watched sporting event in the world by a long shot. This past Superbowl was the most watched ever, with 111.5 million viewers, but in 2006 there were an estimated 715 million people who watched the final match of the World Cup. Wowzer! So in answer to my question in the title of this blog post, yes you should care about the World Cup. It has everything: athleticism, strategy, drama and an international cast of characters who are all trying to just get that ball in the net. With all the problems we have in the world it's fun to think about everybody coming to watch these guys duke it out for the honor of calling themselves world champions. And if you're not really into sports then here are 12 reasons why you should care: Ok, ok, maybe I'm a little superficial but I'm not ashamed to admit that a good part of the reason why I watch soccer is to salivate over all the hot guys. Who can blame me, right? It's like a beauty pageant for men! Have a great weekend everyone!
